After another first round postseason flameout by the Tracy McGrady-Yao Ming-led Houston Rockets, the results forced the franchise’s front office to make some significant off-season changes in order to help this franchise with two of the biggest names in professional basketball, finally win a postseason series.
First the team replaced former head coach Jeff Van Gundy with more open player-friendly veteran NBA head coach, Rick Adelman, whom the Sacramento Kings idiotically fired two seasons ago. Though the team won 52 games last season, the McGrady-Yao combination combined to miss 45 games last season, the fourth consecutive season that at least one of the two have missed significant time with an injury.
The Rockets are hoping some of their on-court off-season additions also pay big dividends. In the backcourt, the team brought back two offensive-minded former players in guards Mike James and Steve Francis. Both players are capable of creating their own shot and more importantly, driving the basket where they can dish to either McGrady or Yao for easy baskets.
The Rockets are also going to be better off in the long run with a content Wells, a gifted but enigmatic player who enjoyed playing for Adelman in Sacramento and is reportedly as happy as a kid in a candy store at the moment. Expect Wells to make a much bigger contribution to the Rockets this season.
Houston also may have lucked up when they selected former Oregon standout, Aaron Brooks with the 26th overall pick in the draft. The rail-thin Brooks was selected the top rookie at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas and has shown real signs of being able to play at the NBA level already.
In addition to shoring up its backcourt, the Rockets also made a major addition to their frontcourt, adding Argentian legend Luis Scola to the roster in the hopes of bringing more athleticism, maturity and toughness to the roster. Scola is a fine player who was the 2007 FIBA Americas MVP. Scola, who has been considered to be the best player in Europe for several years by many international scouts, would appear to be the perfect fit next to Yao and McGrady in the frontcourt. Houston also has veteran center Dikembe Mutombo back for one more season.
Even with all the additions, Houston will only go as far as the team’s ‘Dynamic Duo’ of McGrady and Yao take them.
While the pair put up some wonderful statistics last season (as usual) it is way past time for them to win a round or two in the postseason now. However, it looks like the 2007-08 season may finally be the year.
