The Detroit Pistons have flamed out of the postseason two consecutive years under head coach Flip Saunders after posting absolutely fine regular seasons and heading into the postseason looking like one of the top two teams in the conference.

Unfortunately for the Pistons and their fans, the team was emphatically knocked out of the postseason by the less talented and less experienced Cleveland Cavaliers and superstar LeBron James.

Now, after an offseason in which Detroit GM Joe Dumars wisely retooled his roster by adding several talented young players, the Pistons are heading into the 2007-08 season with a slightly different look than the team has been accustomed to the last half-decade or so.

At the guard positions, the Pistons return floor leader Chauncey Billups and shooting guard Richard Hamilton, but Detroit’s newest additions figure to give the Pistons more explosiveness off the bench than they’ve had in quite some time.

Veteran backups Lindsey Hunter and Flip Murray are solid players but will be challenged by youngsters, Rodney Stuckey and Aaron Afflalo.

In the frontcourt, Detroit returns familiar faces, Rasheed Wallace, Tayshaun Prince and Antonio McDyess, but has plenty of athletic young blood in the form of Jason Maxiell and Amir Johnson.
 
Though the Pistons have posted stellar regular seasons in each of the past two seasons, they have displayed a disturbing trend of folding like a house of cards ever since Saunders replaced the legendary Larry Brown. If the Pistons can regain the toughness they displayed under former head coach Larry Brown, the Pistons could surprise a lot of teams in 2007-08.
