After acquiring superstar guard Allen Iverson from the Philadelphia 76ers last season and subsequently making a small dent in the western conference playoffs - the Denver Nuggets may be ready to kick the postseason door off the hinges altogether this season – if the team can somehow manage to keep its core group of players healthy for an entire season. Whether the Nuggets’ plans will pan out the way they are hoping is certainly up for debate.
In the backcourt, the Nuggets will start Iverson at the ‘two’ and veteran Chucky Atkins at the point after losing veteran Steve Blake to the Portland Trailblazers this offseason. After Iverson and Atkins, the Nuggets have another gifted shooting guard in J.R. Smith, but not much following that trio. Denver also added free agent Yakhouba Diawara who will provide defense off the bench.
Up front, the Nuggets are almost as deep as any team in basketball with high-scoring small forward Carmelo Anthony and Defensive Player of the Year, Marcus Camby at center. Denver also boasts a pair of power forwards that could start for almost any team in the league in Brazilian forward Nene and Kenyon Martin, who is rebounding from microfracture surgery.
Another player the Nuggets can count on is veteran rebounder and non-stop hustler, Eduardo Najera. Don’t be surprised if the Nuggets not only get past the first round of this year’s playoffs, but contend for the Western Conference title as well.
