Knock the Cleveland Cavaliers for their faults all you want, all I know is that, when there were just two teams remaining last season, the Cavaliers were one of them.

Having said that, Cleveland’s emphatic sweep at the hands of the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals showed that the young team is severely lacking in numerous areas.

While the Cavaliers have one of the game’s most complete all-around players in superstar LeBron James, it is a known fact that even the player most recognized as the game’s greatest player of all-time, Michael Jordan, couldn’t win an NBA title until he had some legitimate help in the form of Scottie Pippen, John Paxson, Horace Grant and company.

For the Cavaliers to take the next step towards actually winning an NBA title, Cleveland’s core group of role players must make some significant improvements.

The problem for the Cavaliers is that they will return virtually the exact same roster from last season and will need their improvements to come from the players that currently populate their roster.

While young point guard, Daniel Gibson is a fine shooter, he needs to improve his distribution skills and is just now learning how to play the lead guard position.

What the Cavaliers really need is an outstanding season from an athletic player who can’t seem to stay healthy enough to put it all together for the Cavs.

Second-year guard Shannon Brown will see minutes for Cleveland this season along with veterans Damon Jones, Eric Snow and David Wesley.

In the frontcourt, the Cavaliers have James, arguably the game’s best all-around player. While the Cavaliers will need another monster season from James in order to compete with the revamped teams in the eastern conference this season, the success of the Cavaliers may hinge more on the play of his frontcourt mates than himself.

Center Zydrunas Ilguaskas is aging quickly and may have only two or three good seasons remaining at best and power forward Drew Gooden is a player I believe the Cavaliers should have always gone to a bit more often offensively but do not. The Cavaliers also have two key players out right now in restricted free agents Anderson Varejao and Sasha Pavlovic. Varejao, a power forward, is an high-energy rebounder and defender and Pavlovic is a terrific outside shooter who can play both guard positions.
