The Boston Celtics head into the 2007-08 season with renewed expectations for success – the kind that hasn’t been seen in ‘Beantown’ since the glory days of Boston’s original ‘Big Three,’ Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish.

With the offseason additions of veteran perennial all-stars, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett, joining resident Celtics superstar Paul Pierce, the Celtics have vaulted themselves into the upper echelon of contenders for both, the Eastern Conference – and NBA – titles, in the eyes of most oddsmakers and fans.

At +225, The Celtics are favored to win the Eastern Conference and joins Western Conference powerhouses at +225, trailing only the defending champion San Antonio Spurs at +200, to win their respective conferences.

Forget the fact that the Celtics were the second-worst team in the entire league last season, losing a franchise-record, 18 consecutive games at one point while finishing with the second highest loss total in franchise history.

Through a series of seemingly unfortunate events prior to and during, the NBA draft, Boston managed to finagle Allen away from the Seattle Supersonics and Garnett away from the Minnesota Timberwolves for fairly high prices in each transaction.

While Boston will field a formidable trio with their new ‘Big Three’ the Celtics and head coach Doc Rivers still have plenty of questions that will need to be answered throughout the course of the regular season.

Is second-year point guard Rajon Rondo ready to handle the duties of being a full-time NBA starter for the first time after a surprising rookie season? Will Kendrick Perkins prove to be a capable starting center who compliments Garnett in the frontcourt or a hindrance that slows the entire Celtics’ offense to a grinding halt?

Once the Celtics get past veteran swingman James Posey, athletic guard Tony Allen and veteran forward Scott Pollard, what kind of contribution will their remaining bench players give them?

Still, even with all the questions, the Celtics will undoubtedly improve on their straight up record as well as their wagering statistics across the board from a year ago. The Celtics are at +450 to win the NBA title.
