Outlook: The Tampa Bay Devil Rays have a slew of talented young prospects and one of the best farm systems in all of baseball. Tampa should be able to put up its share of runs this season with left fielder Carl Crawford, first baseman Carlos Pena, centerfielder B.J. Upton, DH Cliff Floyd and right fielder Jonny Gomes occupying the No. 2 through six spots.
If leadoff man, second baseman Akinori Iwamura, can improve his on-base percentage a bit while upping his batting average, (.285), the Rays could be even better at the plate this season.
Third baseman Willy Aybar, catcher Dioner Navarro, (.227) and shortstop Jason Bartlett, (.265 BA) will need to produce in order for the Rays to reach their full potential.
The Rays will start the regular season with their best pitcher, Scott Kazmir on the disabled list, along with former starting outfielder Rocco Baldelli.
James Shields moves into the No. 1 slot with Matt Garza, acquired from the Minnesota Twins this offseason, taking over as No. 2. Andy Sonnastine, Jason Hammel and Edwin Jackson will round out the starting rotation.
Troy Percival is set to close for the Rays with Al Reyes, Dan Wheeler, Gary Glover and Trever Miller being the main setup men out of the bullpen this season.
