Outlook: The Seattle Mariners came close to winning the AL West last season, falling just short, but feel like the favorites in the division after acquiring overpowering lefty Erik Bedard from the Baltimore Orioles and inconsistent, but often masterful, Carlos Silva, to go along with their own CY Young caliber lefty, ‘King’ Felix Hernandez.

Add that trio to veterans, Jarrod Washburn and Miguel Batista and it’s easy to see why the M’s feel so good about themselves.

The Mariners also have a wonderful lineup starting with centerfielder Ichiro Suzuki, cleanup hitter and first baseman, Richie Sexson and third baseman Adrian Beltre.

The loss of right fielder Jose Guillen could hurt but Seattle has replaced him with competent veteran outfielder Brad Wilkerson.

Second baseman Jose Lopez needs to hit better than the .252 batting average he posted last season but the Mariners have even more pop in the bats of shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt, DH and former all-star second baseman Jose Vidro and catcher Kenji Johjima.

The bullpen, featuring left-hander Eric O'Flaherty, Ryan Rowland-Smith, Brandon Morrow and Mark Lowe, has been solid this spring and will need to perform that way all season while getting the ball to closer J.J. Putz, (40 saves, 1.38 ERA).

Left fielder Raul Ibanez could be poised for a breakout season following a .291 season last year in which he hit 21 home runs.
