Outlook: The San Diego Padres boast a solid pitching staff this season, led by perennial Cy Young award contender Jake Peavy and followed by the impressive Chris Young, (9-8 3.68 ERA) and ageless Mike Maddux.

Heck, even the Padres’ fourth and fifth starters, veterans Randy Wolf and Justin Germano can overwhelm hitters on occasion. Oh, by the way, the Padres also have the oft-injured Mark Prior on the roster, though they are not counting on him for much at this point.

All-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman and setup man Heath Bell can still get the job done consistently though Hoffman is aging quickly.

San Diego should also be able to score its share of runs this season with solid hitters Brain Giles and Ta Iguchi batting first and second and power hitters Adrian Gonzalez, (30 homers, 100 RBI), and Khalil Greene, (27 homers, 97 RBI) batting fourth and fifth.

With veteran Jim Edmonds starting the season on the disabled list, new starter, Scott Hairston and left fielder Jody Gerut will be in the spotlight – and expected to produce immediately.

Catchers Josh Bard and Michael Barrett threw out only 17 of 161 runners last year, allowing runners to steal bases almost at will.
