Outlook: The strength of the 2008 New York Yankees will clearly be their imposing batting order.

Captain Derek Jeter, power-hitting outfielder Hideki Matsui, aging Johnny Damon, rock-solid catcher Jorge Posada, first baseman Jason Giambi, outfielder Bobby Abreu, a blossoming Melky Cabrera and Robinson Cano, are going to score their share of runs once again this season.

New York’s possible problems however, are twofold. First off, the Yankees are an aging team position-wise that could use an infusion of youth in the worst way. Oddly enough, a Yankees pitching staff that has been a strength for years, now looks like it could be shaky at best this season with several young hurlers who may or may not be ready for prime time.

Staff ace Chien-Ming Wang is a legitimate No.1, but an aging Mike Mussina posted a mediocre record last season, going 11-10 with a high 5.15 ERA. While Andy Pettitte proved over the season’s second half last year that he still has some gas left in the tank, the team’s other scheduled starters, Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy are both question marks at this point of their respective careers. Hughes went 5-3 with a 4.46 ERA and Kennedy 1-0 in three starts with an impressive 1.89 ERA.

Joba Chamberlain, LaTroy Hawkins and Kyle Farnsworth should be able to get the ball to closer Mariano Rivera often this season but Billy Traber and Ross Ohlendorf are question marks.

If New York can’t get quality pitching against the multitude of power-hitting teams in the talented American League, the fact that the Yankees have the game’s best player in third baseman Alex Rodriguez may not matter much.
