Outlook: The New York Mets enter the 2008 season with plans on reaching the 2008 World Series and nothing less after trading for overwhelming left-handed starter Johan Santana, arguably the best pitcher in all of baseball.
Santana, (15-13, 3.33 ERA) will join a healthy Pedro Martinez, (3-1, 2.57 ERA) in what could be the best one-two combination in the entire National League this season.
Left-hander Oliver Perez, (15-10, 3.56 ERA) and right-hander John Maine, (15-10, 3.91 ERA) will be the team’s third and fourth starters with the final spot in the starting rotation going to either Orlando Hernandez or Mike Pelfrey.
The Mets will need to ease the load on its bullpen, which threw more than 500 innings last season. Aaron Heilman, Pedro Feliciano, Scott Schoenweis are the team’s top three relievers, but the real strength of the Mets lies with their impressive everyday lineup.
Shortstop Jose Reyes has the makings of an absolute star – when he feels like playing hard. Veteran second baseman Luis Castillo hit .296 in 50 games last season after coming over from the Minnesota Twins.
Third baseman David Wright hit a spectacular .325 with 107 RBI’s and 30 home runs. Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado both need to stay healthy all season but centerfield is a question with youngster Angel Pagan expected to take over after playing for the Chicago Cubs last season, batted a uninspiring .264 for the Cubs in 71 games last season.
Starting catcher Brian Schneider and right fielder Ryan Church also need to stay healthy and produce after batting .237 and .272 respectively.
If Delgado can bounce back from a mediocre 24-home run, 87 RBI-season last year – and Martinez can stay healthy – the Mets could hoist the NL Pennant this season.
