Outlook: The Marlins have had a solid spring, going an impressive 17-8 at the time of this writing, but will need to fix their problems from a season, ago, namely making error after boneheaded error, leading the entire majors with 137.
Florida has three solid players in all-star caliber shortstop Hanley Ramirez who batted a spectacular .332 last season with 51 stolen bases, 29 homers and 81 RBI. Second baseman Dan Uggla jacked 32 long balls last season in 632 at-bats but hit just .245 and will need to improve on that average while right fielder Jeremy Hermida hit .296 and drove in 63 runs in 429 at-bats.
Third base belongs to Jorge Cantu who has hit over .400 this spring to win the starting job and could be primed for another season similar to the one he unfurled in Tampa Bay in 2005 when he hit 28 homers and drive in 117 runs.
Left fielder Josh Willingham will need to improve on his mediocre .265 batting average he accumulated in 521 at-bats last season and likewise for catcher Matt Treanor who will play full-time this season after appearing in just 55 games last season and batting .269 with 19 RBI.
The Marlins don’t have true ace after trading flame-throwing lefty Dontrelle Willis to the Detroit Tigers but No. 1 starter Mark Hendrickson, the team's Opening Day starter, is a veteran who can get the job done more often than not.
Rick VandenHUrk, 4-6 last season with a 6.83 ERA is the team’s No. 2 starter while Andrew Miller, Scott Olsen and Ricky Nolasco round out the starting rotation.
Closer Kevin Gregg has 32 saves last season in 36 tries and posted a respectable 3.54 ERA along the way. Justin Miller, Lee Gardner, Taylor Tankersley and a bunch of other young players you’ve likely never heard of will round out the Marlins bullpen.
