Outlook: While most baseball analysts seem fixated on the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Angels, Cleveland Indians or Seattle Mariners, the Detroit Tigers may have set themselves up as the favorite to come out of the American League in 2008 after acquiring flame-throwing lefty Dontrelle Willis and the game’s best hitter this side of Alex Rodriguez in third baseman Miguel Cabrera
Cabrera will join teammates Ivan Rodriguez, Magglio Ordonez, Gary Sheffield, Placido Polanco and Edgar Renteria in producing what many analysts expect to be the best bating order in all of baseball this season. This year’s team should seriously challenge the club record of 957 runs scored by the 1934 Tigers.
While the Tigers possess an absolutely incredible lineup, the starting pitching may be just as good in 2008 with Jeremy Bondrman, Nate Robertson, ageless veteran Kenny Rogers, Justin Verlander and Willis all being able to shut teams down at any given moment.
Terrific set-up men Fernando Rodney and Joel Zumaya will both be out indefinitely to start the season following their respective surgeries.
If Willis can bounce back from his atrocious 10-15, 5.17 ERA season with the Florida Marlins, the Tigers could surpass every team in the American League in 2008.
