Outlook: At some point, every Major League Baseball fan across the country will know that this season represents the Cubbies’ 100th anniversary since they last hoisted a World Series Championship trophy.

Still, the Cubs, who are coming off a division title in 2007, will be a threat in the National League in 2008 with their No. 2 through 5 hitters, outfielder Alfonso Soriano, first baseman Derrek Lee, third baseman Aramis Ramirez and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome leading the way.

The Cubs have question marks at catcher with Geovany Soto and centerfield with Felix Pie, two talented youngsters who are unproven in the majors.

The Cubs starting pitching staff seems solid with staff ace Carlos Zambrano, (18-13) leading the way but followed by talented hurlers, Ted Lilly, Ryan Dempster, Rich Hill, (11-81 3.92 ERA) and the inconsistent Jason Marquis.

The Cubs also have to be concerned about newly named closer Kerry Wood given his medical history. If Wood can stay healthy, the Cubs could have the best closer in the game in 2008.

Shortstop Ryan Theriot and second baseman will need to produce in a big way in 2008 for the Cubs’ offensive to be even more productive that it was last season.

If Zambrano can get on one of the white-hot streaks he had last season, the Cubs could do more than just reach the postseason.
