Outlook: The Baltimore Orioles, once one of the most respected franchises in all of Major League Baseball, have produced 10 consecutive losing seasons and are set to make it 11 in a row in 2008.

However, the Orioles are in the process of setting themselves up for future success by trading away high-priced veterans Miguel Tejada and Erik Bedard for promising young players that could help the franchise return to respectability at some point in the near future.

Until then, the O’s will suffer while struggling with the growing pains of a roster full of young players and a manager that is entering his first full season as a Major League manager.

The Orioles will open the season with a starting pitching staff featuring RHP Jeremy Guthrie, who went 7-5 last season in 32 games and 26 starts, posting a respectable 3.70 ERA. Baltimore will follow Guthrie with a slew of young pitchers or mediocre veterans including Steve Trachsel, Daniel Cabrera, Adam Loewen, Brian Burres and Matt Albers.

The Orioles’ position payers will be led by veterans Melvin Mora, Kevin Millar and Aubrey Hufff and Brian Roberts while hoping to get solid production form youngsters like right fielder Nick Markakis, (.300, 23 HR, 112 RBI), left fielder Luke Scott, and center fielder Adam Jones.

While Markakis is clearly heading toward stardom, the Orioles have no idea what kind of production they will get from many of their other young players, including shortstop Luis Hernandez who played in just 30 games last season while batting .290.

If their plans for the future succeed, expect the Orioles to get back to being a respectable franchise in three or four years. Until then, expect more of the same losing this season in Baltimore.
