What lies ahead for tennis bettors at this prestigious ATP Masters Series – the first big tournament in the clay court portion of the year – is some exceptional matchups to bet on. So without further ado, here is a look at the R16 odds for David Ferrer vs. Janko Tipsarevic.

Tennis Betting Line: David Ferrer -500 Janko Tipsarevic +300

Match Time: 04:00 AM Eastern Time, Thursday April 23. 2008

Tennis Prediction: The second-highest ranked Spaniard in the ATP rankings, No.5 David Ferrer joined the winner’s circle last week by winning the VI Open de Tenis (clay) title on Sunday. Ferrer enjoyed a solid hard court season – making three quarterfinals: in Auckland, Australian Open and Dubai – but his winning start in his clay court debut in Valencia, improving to 16-6 mark for the year, improves Ferrer’s chances in the upcoming months. Not to mention the confidence boost winning a title at such a crucial juncture – right before the start of a premier tournament – should give Ferrer added momentum.

Ferrer, owing to receiving the fifth seeding got a bye into the second round. His reward was to kick of his tournament against former World No.1 and two-time Grand Slam champion Marat Safin. Ferrer was near flawless in his 6-2, 6-3 triumph.

Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia arrives into the third round after two grinding encounters. In the first round, Paul-Henri Mathieu stretched Tipsarevci to the limit, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. In the second round encounter with Ecuadorian veteran Nicolas Lapenti, Tipsarevic battled in a three-hour marathon, pulling ahead with a comeback from behind victory 5-7, 7-6, 6-4.

Tipsarevic’s course through the tournament thus far has been demanding – his victories more a triumph in perseverance than commanding performances. Tipsarevic is not the fittest player on the tour, raising the question whether he can withstand another three-set battle, but this time against one of several exceptional clay court players on the tour and one of the fittest.

In all respects, Ferrer has the edge over Tipsarevic. He is perhaps one of the fittest players on the tour, demonstrated by his dogged defensive baseline play – Ferrer will run down every single ball, determined to defend every single point. On clay, Ferrer has the advantage as well. He is a natural on this surface, like many of his Spanish counterparts. At -500 favorite odds, Ferrer is the smart play.
