Two teams who thought they might be positioned a little better at this point in the season will do battle on Friday night at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, as the Seattle Mariners (13-16) pay a visit to the New York Yankees (14-16) in an American League game that is set to begin at 7:05 PM ET.
Erik Bedard (2-0, 2.04 ERA), the Mariners' key off-season acquisition, takes the mound against Chien-Ming Wang (5-0, 3.23 ERA), currently the ace of the Yankee rotation.

Erik Bedard was traded by the Orioles to Seattle right before the start of the season. It is believed that he is on the verge of becoming one of the great pitchers in baseball. He is able to strike out hitters despite not having a blazing fastball; he chalked up 221 K's last year and may have led the American League in that category had he not missed the whole month of September. As it was, he finished fifth in the Cy Young voting with a 13-5 record and 1.09 WHIP ratio.
He started the season relatively well, with two solid starts, then he went on the DL with inflammation in his hip. He came back on April 26 against Oakland and shut out the A's on two hits over 6-2/3 innings. He has simply mastered the Yankees, giving up six hits in 14 scoreless innings over his last two starts against them, and compiling a 1.64 ERA and 0.88 WHIP ratio in his last five.
But wait just a doggone minute. Chien-Ming Wang, who took a 46-18 record into this season, has won all five decisions this year, and has made four outstanding starts in six outings. He was, however, shelled by the Red Sox and hit hard by the White Sox in consecutive starts, and only a scoreless seven innings against the Indians five days ago brought his ERA back down.
Wang has been dominant over Seattle; over the last couple of seasons he has put together a 1.84 ERA and 0.89 WHIP ratio against the M's, winning all four decisions.
