Horse-drawn starting gates and assistant starters outside the stalls were the norm when Suffolk Downs opened its gates in 1935. The track's rich history, spanning seven decades, includes appearances by such equine superstars as Seabiscuit, Whirlaway and Cigar.
Ground was broken in 1935 on
Massachusetts' first major track,
Suffolk Downs.
Opening Day 1948 attracted
a record 35,529 fans.
The Silver Anniversary MassCap
highlighted the 1959 season.
Leroy Moyers closed the 1967
season with seven winners.
