 The Masters
Time: April
Location: Augusta National Golf Club (Augusta, Georgia)
Field: 90 players – Invitational

The Masters is the inaugural major championship of the year and has several unique distinctions. It is the only major that takes place at the same course every year. Plus, the winner of each year’s Masters Tournament receives the coveted green jacket.

Another great distinction is the Master’s commitment to amateur golf, largely since the tournament was founded by the great amateur golfer Bobby Jones. As such the Masters has a rich and entrenched tradition in honoring amateur golf. Many prestigious amateurs from around the world are invited to participate each year.

Augusta is a notoriously long course that was lengthened to 7445 total yards in 2006, much to the criticism of some its greatest champions, including Arnold Palmer. Augusta is also noted for its fast greens, and remains a course that short hitters struggle on because of its intimidating length.

The Masters Tournament is a 72-hole tournament played over four days. After the first 36 holes the field is cut so that only the lowest 44 scores remain in the tournament.

U.S. Open
Time: June
Location: various locations in the USA
Field: 156 players - Open

The U.S. Open was created on October 4th, 1895 and has since grown in to one of the most prestigious and important golf tournaments in the world. It is a tournament usually dominated by American golfers. The U.S. Open is a 72-hole, four day tournament based on stroke play.

What characterizes the U.S. Open is the difficulty of the courses that host the tournament. The course is usually longer, and the greens are impossibly hilly. The fairways are frustratingly narrow, or pinched, not to mention the high cut of the rough, which has been dubbed “open rough” by most fans.

The Open Championship
Time: July
Location: one of nine distinct links courses in the United Kingdom
Field: 156 players – Open

The Open Championship is more popularly known as the British Open. It is the oldest of the four majors and, since 2002, has been the tourney with the fattest purse, making it an attractive tournament to top-level pros. The purse is over $7 million dollars.

The Open is played on nine different links courses. They are St. Andrews, The Westin Turnberry Resort, Royal Birkdale Golf Club, Carnoustie Golf Links, Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Royal Troon Golf Club, Royal St. George’s Golf Club, Murifield and Royal Lytham & St. Anees Golf Club.

All of those courses are exceedingly difficult to play on, which is why the British Open remains one of the more difficult tournaments to win. It is a tournament rich in history and tradition.

Americans have dominated the tournament since 1995 winning ten of the last twelve tournaments.

PGA Championship
Time: August
Location: various locations in the USA
Field: 156 players – Invitational

The PGA Championship is considered the grand daddy of them all. Until 1957 it was a match play tournament, but converted to stroke in 1958 and continues that tradition today. It is the final of the four major tournaments in professional golf.

The tournament was conceived to be a tournament for the elite players of the world. Therefore, no amateurs are invited to compete in the tournament. It remains a very difficult tournament for players not ranked in the top-70 to gain entry to since so many spots are reserved for past champions and other qualifiers.

The courses vary immensely from year to year. The winner has had as little as -4 under par, or as much as -18 under par depending on the course. In the last ten years, American Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh from Fiji have won the PGA Championship the most.
