This week marks the 20th event of the PGA season with the Wachovia Championship taking place in North Carolina Thursday to Sunday.
Tiger Woods is the defending champ, but won’t get a chance to defend, he is unavailable for selection for another month or so following successful knee surgery. But this season has been another profitable one for Eldrick, winning 3 of his 5 starts and leads the tour in money with 4.4 million. He has earned double the amount of Vijay Singh in half as many events but Vijay is due for his first win this season. Tiger will also miss the Players Championship next week but is aiming to return in time for the U.S. Open in mid-June in his home state of California.
Besides Tiger and his 3 wins, no other player on tour has won multiple events this year. Australia’s Adam Scott picked up his first win last week at the Byron Nelson Championship with a clutch 48-foot putt to win it in a playoff. Scott was the favorite heading in at 12/1 and he didn’t disappoint. Other winners this season include, Phil Mickleson, Boo Weekley, KJ Choi, Geoff Ogilvy, Brian Gay, J.B. Holmes, Sean O’Hair, Andres Romero, Daniel Chopra, Trevor Immelmen at the Masters, Ernie Els, Greg Kraft, Steve Lowrey, D.J. Trahan and Johnson Wagner.
So if we’re sticking with that trend, there could be another ‘first win of the season’ this week at the Wachovia and yes Vijay would gladly take it.
