NFL Week 6 Online Wagering – St. Louis Rams vs. Washington

by Mike Rose

Two teams headed in opposite directions do battle in our nation’s capitol when the St. Louis Rams (0-4, 0-4 ATS) try to get the bagel out of their win column when they head to FedEx Field to take on the Washington Redskins (4-1, 4-1 ATS).

The last time these two teams hooked up was in 2006. The Rams were slender 1.5-point home favorites against the NFL betting line, and successfully covered the spread and picked up the victory when RB Steven Jackson rumbled into the end zone from 21-yards out in overtime. St. Louis won by a 37-31 final tally. That win snapped a streak of three out of four Washington victories and covers against the Rams.

HC Scott Linehan’s days in St. Louis were numbered before the Rams enjoyed their bye week last weekend. A 31-14 loss at home to Buffalo sealed his inevitable fate, and football betting aficionados only wish they were there to punt his butt out of the door after opening up 0-4 both SU and ATS and failing to cover the spread by a whopping 16.8 points per game.

New HC Jim Haslett has his work cut out for him. The Rams rank 30th in the NFL in yards per game (246.8) and dead last in points per game (10.8). That’s awful news for a defense which is allowing the second most yards per game (411.8) and the most points per game (36.8). Since 2000, the only team in the NFL to allow more than 30 points per game was the 2001 Indianapolis Colts, who gave up 30.4, but the Rams are a quarter of the way towards destroying that mark.

While St. Louis has been atrocious in its L/4 games, the exact opposite can be said about the Redskins. HC Jim Zorn is an early candidate for Coach of the Year honors. His Skins have both won and covered four straight games and are looking more and more impressive as the weeks go by. The four straight ATS victories for NFL bettors is the second longest streak in the league.

Last week’s victim was the Philadelphia Eagles. After falling behind 14-0 early, Washington battled back behind their workhorse, Clinton Portis. The University of Miami product ran the ball 29 times for 145 yards and a touchdown. They might’ve been road underdogs against a divisional rival for the second straight week, but Skins bettors laughed last once again, picking up an outright 23-17 victory.

Washington is the only team in the NFL that has yet to commit a turnover this season.

It shouldn’t be much of a surprise that the Rams are heavy underdogs once again this week. Washington is (-13.5) with a ‘total’ of 44. It may be a difficult pill to swallow, but the Rams may have some value for football bettors. The Skins typically play to the level of their competition, as they’re just 2-9-1 ATS in their L/12 against teams with losing records.
