Betting on UFC 91 - Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Josh Hendricks

by D.S. Williamson

This Saturday is UFC 91 and although sports betting fans are all excited about the Randy Couture vs. Brock Lesnar fight, the main event on the UFC 91 card, there is an excellent match earlier on the card between Gabriel Gonzaga and Josh Hendricks.

Gonzaga is 1 and 2 in the Octagon and desperately doesn’t want to go 1 and 3. Should he do so, then his career as a UFC fighter might be in disarray. For online sportsbook betting fans, Gonzaga looked to be a serious up and comer in his first foray into Octagon fighting. Gonzaga took down Mirko Cro Cop with a vicious kick to the head.

In that fight Gonzaga was a serious underdog. But he didn’t disappoint the online betting fans who felt he had shot. Unfortunately, that was about as well as things have gone for Gonzaga. In his next two fights he was beaten by Randy Couture and Fabricio Werdum. Gonzaga will be looking to turn things around in this fight. It’s a must win for Gonzaga if he wishes to remain a force in the heavyweight division.

Josh Hendricks will be making his UFC debut. Usually, a fella entering his first fight in the Octagon wouldn’t have a chance. But online sportsbook betting fans who do their homework know that Josh Hendricks is no slouch. He has an 18 and 4 record in MMA and is the 2007 Arnold Classic Absolute Grappling Champ. He has recorded 10 submissions in his career and there’s no doubt that he will be looking to impress those who feel he has no chance in this fight.

Here are the BetUS online sportsbook betting odds for this fight:

Gabriel Gonzaga - 450

Josh Hendricks + 325

Hendricks is a huge underdog in this fight. Before online wagering fans go out and dump a bunch of dough onto Gonzaga, though, it should be noted that Hendricks does have an outside shot in this fight. As terrific as Gonzaga looked again Mirko Cro Cop, he looked just as bad against Couture and Werdum. Which Gonzaga is going to show up on Saturday night? Will it be the vicious tough guy that took out Cro Cop? Or, will it be the fighter that just didn’t have it against Couture and Werdum?

That’s going to be the key in this match because Hendricks will be ready. You don’t win awards as a grappling champion for nothing. This fight is going to come down to which style will prevail. If Hendricks can get Gonzaga onto the ground, then Hendricks will have a big shot to pull off the upset. But if Gonzaga can keep his distance and use that awesome power that he has in both his hands and legs, then forget it. This thing will be over quickly.

I’m going to give Hendricks the benefit of the doubt. From my point-of-view, it’s always better to go with the underdog if you feel the underdog has a chance. Why? Because the online wagering odds are much better on the underdog.

In this situation, Hendricks may get knocked out in the first round. Or, Gonzaga may have one of his off nights and Hendricks might be able to get Gonzaga to the ground.

I’ll be making a small online bet that Hendricks does exactly that. At + 325 in the BetUS online sportsbook, I have to go with Josh Hendricks to upset Gabriel Gonzaga in this match.
