Betting Online on Horses and Padding Your Bankroll

by Michael Dempsey

National horse racing handicapper Michael Dempsey will attempt to pad his bankroll and yours with his daily column. He will feature at least one Pick 3 or Pick 4 play from a major track along with coverage of major stakes races, longshots, and he will keep you up to date on what is happening on the circuits he covers.

The weather looks beautiful and both Keeneland and Aqueduct have solid betting cards going for Thursday.

Friday is closing day at Keeneland and Churchill Downs opens on Saturday. April 27 is the closing day for Aqueduct, with racing in New York moving to Belmont Park, opening day on April 30.

We’ll head out to Keeneland for today’s featured race of the day, and we’ll invest a modest $24 in the Late Pick 3 at the Big A.

Today's Play of the Day from Keeneland:

KEE Race 7 Alw $54,000N1X (4:10 et)

#2 Veiled Prophet 6/1

#9 Accredit 9/5

#7 Route 4/1

#5 Papa 9/2

Analysis: #2 Veiled Prophet broke his maiden last out when making just his second career start and first off a seven month layoff. Five he beat have come back to run, one next out grad at River, so it does not look like he beat a real tough group. But the colt figures to move forward second off the bench and the extra furlong should suit. Like the pedigree, by Kingmambo out of a Storm Cat mare. Barn is 29% winners with horses making their second start off a +180 day layoff.

#9 Accredit was the beaten chalk last out in the Spicy Award at Aqueduct on the winner, beaten a half length for the win. He earned a solid number last fall breaking his maiden and three good efforts in stakes company followed. Tries the first level allowance condition for the first time here and is a logical threat here at a short price.

Wagering

WIN: #2 to win at 4/1 or better.

EX: 2,9 / 2,5,7,9

TRI: 2,9 / 2,5,7,9 / 2,3,5,7,8,9

Aqueduct Late Pick 3

Starting in Race 7: $1: 2,3,7 / 2,5 / 1,3,6,9 = $24

AQU Race 7 OClm $50,000N2X (3:55 et)

#3 Sensational Love, #2 Them There Eyes, #7 Sally Bowles

#3 Sensational Love race evenly last out at Gulfstream in her first try at today's Alw-2 condition, finishing 5 1/4 lengths behind the winner I Lost My Choo, who missed winning a G3 in her next start at Keeneland by a head and a nose. Runner up She's All Eltish returned to win the G2 Bonnie Miss in her next outing on 3/29. Her best three efforts have come on grass and she looks well spotted here facing a softer group than what she saw in Florida.

#2 Them There Eyes was fifth last out after a wide trip on the main track in her first go off a five month layoff. She has landed in the exacta in 5 of 8 trips on the weeds including winning the $78K Scoot three back here going a mile.

AQU Race 8 Alw $51,000N1X (4:25 et)

#5 Better Again, #2 Positive Prospect

#5 Better Again dueled for the early and battle don right to the wire, coming up a neck shy of the top spot. The winner of the race was Pyramyst, who came back to beat $10K starter allowance foes in her next start on 4/17 at Gulfstream. Last out speed fig towers over this compact field of five.

AQU Race 9 Md $35,000 (4:55 et)

#1 Guessing Game / #1a Miss Western Charm, #9 Timirene, #6 Wicked Tale, #3 On Jodi's Account

#1 Guessing Game drops back in for a tag here for her first start off a five month layoff. The filly was in the mix in her last four starts on grass last fall, checking in third once and fourth three times. Returns in a weak looking spot here for Martin barn that is showing a 0 for 11 mark with horses coming back off a 61-180 day layoff. Just not much else in here to get excited about.

#9 Timirene did not fire last out, tiring to finish a well beaten ninth over "good" ground. Does have a third on the turf last April and perhaps with firmer ground this gal will bounce back with a better effort.

Live Longshots:

These are price plays to watch today. A small win-place wager is in order or if your pockets are deep enough, use these runners in your trifecta and Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers. One or two of these could be the difference between a regular day at the track and hitting the IRS window with a signer.

Aqueduct

R1: #5 Watch My Lass 10/1

R4: #3 Dash of Luck 10/1

R7: #2 Them There Eyes 10/1

R9: #9 Timirene 8/1

R9: #6 Wicked Tale 15/1

Keeneland

R1: #7 Peytons Posse 15/1

R1: #5 Fenice 12/1

R2: #7 Bagoga 8/1

R3: #5 Tripp to Hedo 10/1

R3: #12 Meetmeatthechapel 10/1

R4: #6 Gasconade 10/1

R5: #7 Eroberer 12/1

R5: #6 Storm Breeze 8/1

R7: #1 Polo Lounge 20/1
